Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) |
| |
| What is MRI? |
|
MRI uses magnetic
fields and radio frequency pulses to obtain images of the human
body. It is a painless procedure that lasts approximately 30
minutes and no radiation is used. During the exam you will
hear loud knocking sounds but this is normal. Hearing
protection will be provided for all patients.
|
 |
Patients that suffer
from claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces) should consult with
their ordering provider. Hopefully they will provide you with
oral medications that will help them with this exam.
|
Due to the use of a
large magnet in your exam, you will be asked to remove all
jewelry, watches, keys, wallets and credit cards prior to your exam.
This will help prevent damage to your property and the magnet.
Metallic objects on your clothing will also need to be removed so
you may be asked to change into a gown.
|
You will be able to
communicate with the technologist at all times during the exam, so
if you experience any concerns or difficulties once the exam starts
please tell the technologist.
|
The MRI exam is
typically pain-free, without any danger to your body. However
with certain medical conditions, serious bodily harm or damage can
come from the magnetic field. These conditions are in patients
with cardiac pacemakers, ear implants, aneurysm clips in the brain
or metallic fragments in the eye. If any of these conditions
apply to you then please notify the MRI Department
BEFORE
your appointment. If you have been employed in an occupation
where you may have gotten metal inside the eye (such as welders or
sheet metal workers), please notify the technologist. Regular
x-rays will first be obtained of the concerned region to be certain
there is no metal there.
|
The total risk of MRI
to the mother and fetus during pregnancy are not known. If you
think you may be pregnant then please tell the receptionist before
your exam.
